Kate goes back to school.
The Oscar-winning actress paid a surprise visit to Blessed Hugh Faringdon School in Southcote to chat to the aspiring actors and offer some top tips.
She told them: “Don’t be shy because I am very normal.”
Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet made a surprise appearance at her old stage school to share some top tips with the aspiring actors.
Starmaker pupils were thrilled to see the Reading-born superstar on their stage on Wednesday.
About 75 students gathered in the main hall of Blessed Hugh Faringdon School in Southcote for their regular Wednesday night rehearsals for their next production, Boogie Nights, completely unaware the award-winning Hollywood actress was just a few feet away behind a curtain.
Michelle Palin, membership secretary of Starmaker told getreading: “We got them there under false pretences because they had no idea Kate was going to be arriving.
“They were all sat there impatiently as teenagers do and we held open rehearsals for parents so they could see what we were doing with Kate as well.”
The mum-of-two was revealed as the curtains were drawn and she was greeted by a huge round of applause and cheering from the starstruck students.
Ms Palin said: “The atmosphere was electric.”
An excited Kate, the school’s patron, spent half an hour chatting to students and answering their questions about her career and time at Starmaker.
She told them: “Don’t be shy because I am very normal. Ask me questions, anything you like.
“For me the best thing about Star-maker is that everybody looks after each other, and there’s nothing more exciting than your first opportunity of getting backstage.”
Students asked questions ranging from whether she preferred stage to film work to who she would most like to work with.
“All you could see around the room was kids texting about Kate being there,” said Ms Palin.
During the rehearsals Kate joined in with a drama workshop run by Ben Ashton, when she starred opposite aspiring actor Jack Kowalik.
Willink School pupil Jack, 15, said: “I was so starstruck because she was acting right next to me and I was thinking what if I do something really bad.”
Kate, 33 and originally from West Reading, also took time out of her busy schedule to watch students rehearse for their latest production Boogie Nights, to be performed at Wilde Theatre in Bracknell from October 6 to 10.

She's happy. and that's what matters.
She’s an Oscar-winning actress revered for her beauty and talent - so it comes as no surprise that Kate Winslet is happier than ever.
The British actress cites turning 30 as the landmark age she began to feel comfortable in her own skin - and admits she’s having the time of her life.
‘I’m happier about myself than I’ve ever been,’ Kate told Hello! magazine.
‘I am absolutely amazed that here I am at the age of 33, having had two children, and having had no work done, and I feel really good.
‘Maybe it’s just hormones or something. And age.’
While The Reader star battled with her weight during her teen years, she now boasts a slimline figure most would envy. Yet unlike most Hollywood starlets, Kate has a nonchalant attitude to exercise.
‘I haven’t done any exercise since October. I haven’t done a thing. So who knows how I’m holding it together.
‘Pilates definitely helped a bit. However, when I was doing it consistently, I wasn’t doing it that consistently. So maybe it’s just being busy and age.’
On being in her thirties, Kate said: ‘I don’t feel self-conscious any more. I think turning 30, you’re allowed to be less obsessed with how you look. I really like being 33.
‘I don’t think I look younger than I am or older than I am. I think I look my age.
‘Also, while I feel very joined at the hip with my family, I also feel independent.’
This has been a remarkable year so far for the Reading-born actress who won two Golden Globes for her work in The Reader and Revolutionary Road - and the Academy Award for Best Actress after being nominated five times for the accolade.
‘Because of them, people see me as somebody who has a weight and gravity and who works hard.
‘Respect has come with them. It also makes me feel, ‘Okay, well, hopefully I’m in this for the long haul,’ she added.
Kate is extra proud it was her collaboration with director husband Sam Mendes on Revolutionary Road that won such acclaim and gave her a Golden Globe.
However, their busy filming schedule proved tough at times on her daughter Mia, 8, from her first marriage to Jim Threapleton, and son Joe, five.
‘The children were with us the whole time,’ Kate said.
‘It drove them crazy because usually one of us is with them while the other is working.
‘The fact that both of us were out from six in the morning until eight at night was frustrating for them. But they were great about the whole thing; they’re very adaptable.
‘They were almost as excited as we were when the film was coming out. And they got to see a lot of [co-star] Leo DiCaprio again so it was very, very sweet.’
Many believe Kate has the dream life - an A-list film career, a happy family and millions in the bank.
‘I don’t have a perfect life,’ she said.
‘There are things I could implement within my life that would probably make it easier.
‘But I deliberately don’t do it because if I did, I would be living that movie star existence that I really try and resist.
‘I mean, it’s very tempting to have a nanny and live in a gated community and have a chef – I’d love to have a few dinners cooked for me.
‘But I don’t want that for my children. When they’re older, if people say to them, ‘Did you have a chef?’ I want them to be shocked by the question,’ added Kate.

Kate hates short hair.
Kate Winslet hated having short hair so much she insists she will never repeat the look. The 33-year-old actress sported a chin-length, textured bob at the New York premiere of her movie Hideous Kinky in 1999.
Looking at a photo taken on the night, Kate said: “Bless my heart. Well, my boobs look good. Yeah, that was my short haircut - I hated it. I would never do it again. You have to do short hair. It’s like a nightmare. It’s just not flattering to my face shape - at all.” Kate - who raises two children with husband Sam Mendes, daughter Mia, eight, and five-year-old son Joe - is happier with the fresh-faced look she boasted at the New York premiere of 2008’s The Reader, where she had flowing blonde locks and a deep tan.
Kate told Allure magazine: “That was a damn fine look. I had just gotten back from vacation in the Turks and Caicos islands, and I was all nice and tan, and my hair had gone blonder. “I don’t lie out in the sun, and I always wear a high sun factor, so it was from literally just wandering around in the sun for a week, chasing after the kids and making sure nobody drowned in the sea.”
Kate added the most important thing for her is that she is comfortable in what she chooses to wear, and is dressed appropriately for her age.
She favours a “relaxed” look of “clean, fresh skin” and barely-there make-up.

"When the Academy Awards came around, I thought, 'I'm young. I'm 21 years old and I'm in this movie and it's very successful and I have been nominated for an Academy Award for this and I haven't done any of this through being skinny or through starving myself or anything like that'.
And so I thought, 'I'm just going to hold my head high and I'm just going to be the person that I am'."

Kate still wears a ring Leonardo DiCaprio gave her!
Leo, 34, and Kate were reunited on-screen last year for Revolutionary Road, which was directed by Kate’s husband Sam Mendes.
Kate, 33, has revealed being such close friends in real life meant they were the perfect choice for the film.
She said: "I would even let Leo physically harm me if it meant making a scene better, and I know he feels the same way.
“If we didn't have this rare friendship, I don't think we would be able to show that chemistry on screen."
